This vignette Jonatha Brooke composition on the well-loved poem by e.e. cummings is set for a cappella vocal jazz ensemble in a series of small phrases that each seem to have their own character in telling the oddly-phrased story. A solo/duet line is written apart from the supporting ensemble figures, allowing the melody (as Brooke sings it in her version) to be front-and-center, while the rest of the group wraps their sound around in support. Surprising modal harmony and cool voicings make this a challenging but rewarding short piece for the middle of your group’s set.
