Fun fact: This very early arrangement of Kerry’s was written during graduate school at The University of North Texas, and it earned him a Down Beat Student Music Award for arranging. This chart is a highly unconventional approach to John Coltrane’s “Impressions”, as the original tune’s simple modal harmony (two minor chords, as in “So What”) is heavily reharmonized, and the groove is transformed into a funky, swinging beat 3 backbeat. A wordless vocal arrangement, the ensemble’s style approaches modern big band sounds. Solo space over the original modal changes, along with an aleatoric development section leading into an unusual soli with an asymmetrical form make this an all-around rather weird chart, but its impact in performance, for an advanced group, can be very powerful, particularly as a closer!
composite rhythm section part (mix of notation and chords/slashes), optional tenor sax.
