Wordless Vocal Charts
I think I've become sort-of known for writing more wordless vocal charts than average, for the field. I have a particular love for the exciting, special challenge posed by truly treating the voice as an instrument and using, essentially, scat syllables, to get musical lines and textures across in an abstract, artistic manner. My debut album with Julia Dollison, Vertical Voices: The Music of Maria Schneider, is entirely wordless, and it had to be that way in order to avoid distracting from the true musical intent of her writing, I think. There's a precedent in vocal jazz history for this wordless approach, starting with Gene Puerling and the Hi-Lo's, and maybe earlier. Bobby McFerrin, Swingle Singers, Singers Unlimited, Greg Jasperse's popular VoiceDance series, many of Paris Rutherford's more aggressive charts, and more. I hope you enjoy my contributions in this area.
