The 83rd Greatest Song of All Time

Not bad for "All Time"...Norwegian Wood was one of the only Beatles songs written in triple meter, so Laurence Hobgood, writing for Kurt Elling, decided to fix that, in addition to most of the chord changes.  My adaptation for vocal jazz ensemble does what the Elling version does, and it was a good choice for a chart, I think...commissioned by Sierra College this past year.

One...two...kill...MURDER!

The title is a reference to a Paris Rutherford-esque tune count-off from the fond memories I have from my UNT Jazz Singers days.  But it's also relevant to today's added chart, "Murder By Numbers", a tune by The Police that is less about actual murder than it is about corruption in politics.  It was part of a set of music that helped carry Folsom High School's "A" Jazz Choir (directed by Curtis Gaesser) to a Down Beat SMA win in 2012 as well as wins at the Fullerton, Reno and Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festivals.  This was their closer, and they always brought the audience to its collective feet!

And we're off...The May New Charts releases begin!

I'm going to start releasing the new demos and charts all month, one at a time, leading up to the big promo announcement in early June. Here's the first new chart to be added to the site this month: "Old Folks At Home", commissioned by Winter Park High School in Florida.

Second new chart of 2012 added...Metheny's "Phase Dance"

As a quick follow-up to Ben Folds' "The Luckiest", I've added a second chart from another one of my famous friends (get ready for the big name drop!), Pat Metheny.  "Phase Dance" was released on the self-titled debut CD from the Pat Metheny Group in 1978 and was cowritten by Metheny and Lyle Mays.  Although I believe at least one vocal jazz chart already exists on this tune somewhere, this one is wordless and very simple, and I've put it in the Starter Series, so it's only $60 and has Part Tracks and a Rhythm Track available.  Make sure and head to the Chart Store or the Listening Area to check out this new demo.  If you need a closer for a young group, this may be just the thing to round out your Spring set!
